Barbara Kirby

Barbara Kirby is a candidate for the North Carolina House of Representatives in District 87. She grew up in Hudson and currently lives in the Oak Hill community.

After graduating from Pfeiffer College, Ms.Kirby began her “adult life” as a reporter for the Hickory Daily Record. After earning a master’s degree from Appalachian State University, she worked as a school librarian for 34 years in Gaston, Catawba and Caldwell Counties. Ms. Kirby retired from Caldwell County Schools in 2016, having worked most recently at Hudson Elementary School. She has served on the board of directors of the Western North Carolina Alliance and was recently appointed to the Caldwell County Arts Council. Ms. Kirby volunteers at a local food pantry and has held many and various positions in her church.

Ms. Kirby has long held, deeply passionate beliefs in the Democratic values of social justice, equal opportunity for all people, and conservation of the earth’s resources. Above all, she believes that elected officials must behave ethically, responsively and respectfully toward the people they represent. Ms. Kirby seeks political office as a servant leader.

Top 3 Issues:

  • Gerrymandering and voting rights

  • Transparency in government (open meetings, “sunshine laws”, public input)

  • Ethics in government

  • (Also Medicaid expansion if they don’t do something in the next session, but I think they might.)
